One Region, One Standard: Southern Africa's Customer Experience Council Relaunches with Continental Ambitions

Gaborone, Botswana - For years, customer experience professionals across Southern Africa have built their standards, trained their practitioners and fought for better service delivery largely alone, one country at a time. That is now changing. The Southern Africa Customer Experience Council (SACXC) has relaunched, positioning itself as the region's first coordinated voice for a discipline that is

One Region, One Standard: Southern Africa's Customer Experience Council Relaunches with Continental Ambitions

Headquartered in Gaborone, in the same city as the SADC Secretariat itself, currently the SACXC draws its membership from six national and regional CX associations and fifteen professional training institutes spanning all sixteen SADC member states. Its motto captures the ambition plainly: “One Region. One Standard. One Customer Experience.”

A Regional Standard, not a Takeover

SACXC is careful to describe itself as a coordinator rather than a competitor. It will not run its members' programmes or absorb their governance; instead, it aims to knit together sixteen separate national conversations about what “professional CX” means into a single, credible regional standard. That includes coordinating accreditation pathways, so CX qualifications carry weight across borders, generating SADC-specific research and benchmarking data, and giving the region's training institutes and associations a shared platform to advocate with governments, regulators and employers.

For service delivery, the stakes are practical rather than academic. Multinational and regional businesses operating across SADC increasingly want a recognised, region-wide CX credential, much as they already expect from accounting, law or HR bodies. By setting common benchmarks and good-practice guidance, SACXC hopes to lift the floor on service quality across markets that currently range widely in CX maturity.

Leadership and Transition

The Council is currently led on an interim basis by Charlene Chibonda, Director of Training and CX Innovation at the Chartered Institute of Customer Management (CICM), who has been steering the relaunch as Interim Secretary General. SACXC says its inaugural board will be formally announced at the end of September, marking the transition from interim coordination to elected, member-driven governance with representation deliberately balanced to give smaller and larger SADC economies an equal voice.

Linking Into the Continental Agenda

SACXC is an affiliate member of the African Council of Customer Experience Organizations (ACXCO), the continental body advancing shared CX standards, accreditation and research across Africa. Through that affiliation, and through engagement with pan-African institutions including the African Union and continental standards bodies, SACXC intends to channel Southern Africa's priorities upward while bringing continental resources and recognition back down to its members without ceding its own regional independence. It also expects to build working relationships with sister regional CX councils elsewhere on the continent, avoiding duplicated effort on shared challenges.

On research, the Council points to an emerging body of national CX and citizen-experience data including CICM's own national index work already running in 13 countries as the foundation for a fuller, SADC-wide customer satisfaction picture. Early national findings have flagged uneven digital experience and service-delivery gaps alongside genuine pockets of improvement, the kind of evidence SACXC hopes to scale regionally.

The Road Ahead

The challenge is real: unifying standards across sixteen states of vastly different market maturity, without smothering local mandates, is no small task. But if SACXC delivers on its coordination promise, it could become for Southern African customer experience what similar bodies have become for other professions a credible, unifying voice built by the region, for the region.
